Resource Map editorial consistency cleanup (June 2026)

Date: 2026-06-14 Branch: development Scope: Cleanup and harmonization only — no new resources, no new claims, no re-ingestion, no mission broadening. The goal was to bring the June 2026 additions into the same editorial pattern as the published main MkDocs site.

1. Pages reviewed

New / recently promoted resource pages reviewed against established published pages (CDM-001, CSH-016, UNI-003, EXT-003):

  • CDM-023 Cybersecurity Clinic — already complete; no change.
  • CDM-024 CoBaAB Lab — already complete; no change.
  • CDM-025 Center for Data Science — added Source URL block.
  • CDM-026 RAISE Lab — added Source URL block.
  • CDM-027 LIHCA Lab — added Source URL block; normalized relationships.
  • CDM-028 DICE Lab — added Source URL + relationship sections.
  • CDM-029 Center for Web Intelligence — added Source URL block.
  • CDM-030 Divergent Design Lab — added Source URL block.
  • CDM-031 Technology for Social Good Lab — added Source URL + relationship sections.
  • COM-001 VARC Lab — already complete; no change.
  • COM-002 Center for Communication Engagement — added Source URL block.
  • CSH-020 Connolly Lab — already complete (exemplar); no change.
  • CSH-021 Center for Community Research — added Source URL block.
  • EXT-012 ATLAS (Argonne) — reviewed; left on external-partner template (correctly an external partner).
  • UNI-012 Center for Community Health Equity — reframed to the standard UNI center page template (Option A).

2. Files modified

Source / governance (hand edits)

File Change
resource-map-index.md Added COM prefix + units/communication.md ownership file; expanded Content Type enum; added Content type definitions table and legacy-reclassification policy.
scripts/generate_home_stats.py Added COM → College of Communication label and ordering so the home-stats table renders COM consistently with other colleges.
resources/CDM/CDM-025.md Added ## Source URL provenance block.
resources/CDM/CDM-026.md Added ## Source URL provenance block.
resources/CDM/CDM-027.md Added ## Source URL; added ## Linked Relationship IDs mirroring the existing CDM-011 prose reference.
resources/CDM/CDM-028.md Added ## Source URL, ## Documented Relationships, and ## Linked Relationship IDs (_None yet._).
resources/CDM/CDM-029.md Added ## Source URL provenance block.
resources/CDM/CDM-030.md Added ## Source URL provenance block.
resources/CDM/CDM-031.md Added ## Source URL, ## Documented Relationships, and ## Linked Relationship IDs (_None yet._).
resources/COM/COM-002.md Added ## Source URL provenance block.
resources/CSH/CSH-021.md Added ## Source URL provenance block.
resources/UNI/UNI-012.md Option A reframe (see §5).

Generated outputs (via ./sync_docs.sh)

  • units/cdm.md + docs/units/cdm.md — CDM-027 Related IDs now resolves to CDM-011 (consequence of the relationship fix).
  • docs/index.md, docs/resource-map-index.md — home-stats block now shows COM | College of Communication | 2 in order.
  • docs/resources/… mirrors of every touched source page.
  • Stale artifacts refreshed to current corpus (94 resources): equipment-index.md (+ docs mirror), docs/reports/access-status-review.md, docs/reports/verification-review.md. These were still reporting the pre-June corpus (83 resources) and are now accurate.
  • docs/reports/README.md — added this report to the index (not added to public nav; see §6).

3. Standards updated

In resource-map-index.md:

  • COM prefix documented under Resource ID Governance and added to the Ownership Files list (units/communication.md — College of Communication).
  • Content type enum expanded to infrastructure, laboratory, center, clinic, curriculum, program, service, partnership.
  • Content type definitions table added:
  • laboratory — faculty-led or research-group lab.
  • center — broader organizational unit, center, institute, or multi-project / multi-lab hub.
  • clinic — service-learning, public-service, or client-facing applied unit.
  • infrastructure — shared technical platform, facility, space, equipment-support resource, or access platform.
  • (plus curriculum, program, service, partnership).
  • Legacy-classification policy: existing entries may use a broader legacy type and must not be silently reclassified during ordinary intake; reclassification happens only in a separate, evidence-backed, reported refactor.

4. Page-structure fixes made

  • Added the standard ## Source URL provenance block to 9 new pages that omitted it (CDM-025/026/027/028/029/030/031, COM-002, CSH-021), matching the established Contacts → People & contacts → Source URL → relationships order.
  • Added the relationship dual-section pattern (## Documented Relationships + ## Linked Relationship IDs) to CDM-028 and CDM-031, which previously had no relationship sections at all (using the _None yet._ convention seen on CSH-020).
  • No empty boilerplate was added where it would worsen usability; sections were only added where they restore the established skeleton.

5. Relationships normalized

Page Prose reference Action
CDM-027 "applications overlap CDM-011 medical-informatics themes" Added CDM-011 to Linked Relationship IDs to mirror the page's own Documented Relationships prose (thematic affiliation, already asserted — not a new relationship).
CDM-028 No cross-resource IDs in prose Added relationship sections with _None yet._.
CDM-031 "may use CDM-001 IRL makerspace for physical prototypes" (Equipment note) Not linked — speculative and unevidenced. Added relationship sections with _None yet._ and noted the possibility transparently in Documented Relationships.
COM-002 COM-001 (already linked); "ME Lab" / "Streaming Lab" are candidates, not resource IDs No link change needed.
UNI-012 EXT-010, EXT-009, EXT-011, UNI-004, CDM-011 All already present in Linked Relationship IDs; kept intact.

No new relationships were invented and no reciprocal links were added.

6. UNI-012 template decision (Option A)

UNI-012 previously used an external-partner template (## Organization, ## Relationship to DePaul, ## Known collaborations & connections, ## Collaborative documents). It is now a standard UNI center page (Option A):

  • Organization + Relationship to DePaul merged into ## Description & capabilities.
  • Known collaborations & connections folded into ## Documented Relationships.
  • Collaborative documents table facts (2015 founding, 2021 MOU, charter not publicly posted) preserved as concise provenance in ## Notes.
  • Rush University recorded as a linked external partner (EXT-010); Owner Unit set to the documented administrative host (College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences).
  • No evidence was lost; all source links and the joint DePaul–Rush nature are retained.

Option B (a documented hybrid joint-center template) was not adopted — the evidence does not require a separate template, and Option A is less disruptive.

7. Items deliberately NOT changed

  • Legacy content_type classifications — e.g., single-PI labs typed center (CSH-016 "Grice Laboratory"; CDM-027 LIHCA), and other pre-existing types — left untouched per the new legacy policy. Reclassification belongs to a separate evidence-backed refactor.
  • CDM-031 → CDM-001 relationship — left unlinked (speculative "may use").
  • EXT-012 (ATLAS) — kept on the external-partner template; it is genuinely an external partner.
  • People & contacts — not hand-added to CDM-025, CDM-031, COM-002, or EXT-012; these have no named person in the registry, and apply_people.py will inject the section automatically if/when a person link exists.
  • MkDocs nav — not expanded (no nav bloat).
  • Pre-existing June churn on ~76 untouched pages (whitespace + prior content edits from earlier sessions) — out of scope; left as-is. The incremental whitespace churn that this sync run would have added to untouched pages was reverted (see §9).

8. Remaining style / taxonomy issues (recommendations)

  1. Redundant ## Source URL boilerplate. The block ("Official links … listed under Contacts above") is low-information. Kept for consistency now, but a future pass could retire it corpus-wide rather than per-page.
  2. Content-type taxonomy drift. Several single-PI labs remain typed center/laboratory inconsistently. Recommend a dedicated, evidence-backed reclassification refactor (now governed by the legacy policy).
  3. sync_docs.sh is non-idempotent. Re-running appends a trailing blank line to many pages (the whitespace churn observed here). Recommend making the apply_* padding idempotent.
  4. Reports navigation is heavy. 26 of 53 report files are in the public nav. Recommend trimming the public Reports tab to a curated set and relying on reports/README.md for internal reports (this cleanup report is index-only, not in nav).
  5. Product identity. The site title ("Hardware Technology Resource Map") under-represents the now-broader scope (clinics, social-good labs, communication). Flagged for a naming decision; no change made.

9. Generator / sync behavior

./sync_docs.sh was run after source edits. Because the generator is non-idempotent, it added a trailing blank line to ~86 pages. To honor "do not stage unrelated whitespace-only sync churn," the working tree was snapshotted before sync and every untouched page was restored to its pre-sync state; only the 10 edited pages, the COM home-stats fix, the CDM-027 unit-index update, and the stale-report refreshes (§2) were kept.

10. Does development still feel consistent with published main?

Yes. New pages now follow the same section skeleton (Summary → Description → Access → Verification → Equipment → Contacts → People & contacts → Source URL → Documented Relationships → Linked Relationship IDs → Notes), the same relationship dual-section pattern, and the same provenance block as the published pages. UNI-012 no longer reads as an external-partner page. The written governance now documents the COM prefix and the laboratory/clinic types, so the standards match the corpus. Remaining inconsistencies (legacy types, boilerplate, nav weight) are documented above as deliberate, separately-scoped follow-ups rather than ad-hoc changes.
