Organization

The Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science synchrotron X-ray user facility. Researchers from universities, industry, and national labs access beamlines through peer-reviewed user proposals to collect high-energy X-ray scattering, spectroscopy, and imaging data.

Access status

Relationship to DePaul

DePaul researchers and students participate as APS users—not through a separate DePaul-owned beamline. Physics and materials research at DePaul includes local instrumentation development (see CSH-007) intended to de-risk experiments before deployment at synchrotron facilities. Grant narratives reference APS beamline 7-ID as an external experimental endpoint for funded beamline-instrumentation workflows.

DePaul holds a validated University–Argonne User Agreement (curator-verified; private document to be uploaded with restricted permissions) that covers Argonne's user facilities — including APS, the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), and the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (EXT-004). Note that this agreement does not cover every Argonne facility: ATLAS (EXT-012), for example, is a separate Argonne sub-facility reached through a different pathway. A national laboratory is a large organization whose sub-facilities may be accessed via different agreements and contacts.

Known collaborations & connections

  • DePaul CSH research using APS beamlines for X-ray scattering (for example materials and biomineralization studies) via standard user access (DePaul news — Atomic Anatomy; DePaul Discoveries).
  • Beamline 1-ID data collection cited in DePaul student/faculty bone biomineralization research (DePaul Discoveries).
  • DePaul affiliation appears in APS technical-community contexts (for example InterCAT Technical Workgroup presentations).
  • Connected DePaul resources: CSH-005, CSH-007, CSH-001 (local prep/fabrication).
  • Gonzalez Aviles materials program (CSH-013, PER-103): synchrotron powder diffraction at APS beamline 11-BM (PUB-095); ZITO PDF study with data collected at APS (PUB-010; DePaul news — Atomic Anatomy).

Verification

  • Status: likely (~)
  • Confidence: 86/100
  • Rationale: Major external partner maintains active public website and standard user/membership access pathways; DePaul relationship documented on map.
  • Last verified: 2026-05-30
  • Evidence:
  • Partner primary website reachable (May 2026)
  • DePaul cross-references and partnership notes in resource map (May 2026)
  • APS user facility proposal process documented at aps.anl.gov

Equipment

DOE APS user facility at Argonne; beamline instruments are not DePaul inventory.
